George Witting Obituary

George F. Witting, 79, of Two Rivers, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2022, at Sharon Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls.

He was born on October 21, 1942, in Hancock, MI, son of the late John and Mary (Klarich) Witting Sr. He attended school in Hancock, MI, graduating with the class of 1961. George served in the Naval Reserve Unit from 1961-1962, then went into active duty with the United States Navy from 1962-1964. He was stationed on the USS Barney DDG-6 Guarded Missile Destroyer during the Cuban Crisis. In April of 1963, George transferred to the USS Longbeach CGN-9 until his discharge in March of 1964. George attended Suomi College in Hancock, MI, from 1964-1966 and went on to graduate from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, in 1968 with a BS degree in Business Education, and in 1970 received his Master’s Degree in Business Education. In 1968-1969 George taught high school and senior college business classes in the Palo Verde, California School District in Blythe, California. In March of 1970 George and the former Lois Matson were married at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Chassell, MI. In August of 1970 George and Lois moved to Two Rivers, where George taught Business Education and was the Two Rivers Boys Golf Coach for 28 years, retiring in 1998.

George is survived by his wife of 52 years: Lois, Two Rivers; two sons: Brett (Melinda) Witting and Cory Witting all of Two Rivers; two daughters: Raelynn Witting of Clermont, FL, and Cara (Adam) Rohrer of Shoto; the four lights of his life, his grandchildren: Haiden Theiss of Clermont, FL, Tess Galbraith Witting, Two Rivers, and Sawyer and Liam Rohrer of Shoto. George is further survived by his twin brother: James (Sandra) Witting of Chassell, MI; a sister: Margaret (John) Ylitalo of Hancock, MI; one brother: Bruce Witting, Toivola, MI; one sister-in-law Gertrude Witting of Chassell, MI; and his mother-in-law Dorothy (Matson) Kalliainen of Gwinn, MI. Nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends also survive. George was preceded in death by his parents: John and Mary Witting Sr.; one sister and brother-in-law: Carol (Paul) Coppo; two brothers: John Witting and Albert Witting; one nephew: Chad Witting; and one sister-in-law: Patricia (Matson) Marr.

George was a very social person with a great sense of humor, always ready with a good joke or story, and always ready to party; he always had an answer or an opinion (which, of course, was always the right one). He was very passionate about golf, even making golf clubs for several years. George enjoyed spending time with family and friends and spending time at the family cottage in Upper Michigan. He enjoyed traveling and spending time in Florida for a few months each year. George was a member of the Manitowoc Yacht Club, where he enjoyed many a good time.

A Celebration of Life for George will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Manitowoc Yacht Club, (815 Maritime Drive, Manitowoc) from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Please join us for this celebration of good memories. Military Honors will be accorded by the Vietnam Veterans Chapter #731 of Manitowoc at 2:00 p.m. in the parking lot of the Manitowoc Yacht Club. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at the Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock, MI, at a later date this summer.
